What Is CanSkate?
The Preschool and Canskate programs at the Delta Skating Club are “Learn-to-Skate” programs for beginners, whether they want to be figure skaters, recreational skaters or sport skaters (hockey, ringette, speed skating).
Skate Canada CanSkate Program
CanSkate is Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. When you sign up for CanSkate you will be in a program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. You will earn badges and other incentives as you learn fundamental skating skills. Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP certified professional coach. Professional coaches are assisted by trained Program Assistants. The coach to student ratio is a maximum of 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning. CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada Skating Programs, and is presented by BMO Financial Group, reflecting their commitment to grassroots development.

CANSKATE PRESCHOOL PROGRAM: Ages 3 to 5 years
Our CanSkate Preschool program is for children ages 3 to 5 years that have never skated before or have just started to learn to skate through local Parks and Recreation programs. The lessons are 30 minutes in duration with a “Skate Canada Certified Professional Coach” with the goal of having a ratio of 7 - 8 skaters to 1 Coach, along with the assistance of Skate Canada Trained Program Assistants. Our young skaters learn in an energetic fun environment to music and skating aids, with the goal of having fun, while learning how to become comfortable on the ice and taking those first strides.
What’s after Preschool?
Our Preschool skaters work on Canskate Stage 1 and will be moved to the Canskate program with the Coaches recommendation, once they have achieved Canskate Stage 1 and show they can move forward on their own.
DSC CANSKATE PROGRAM
Canskate introduces young skaters to the fundamentals of skating; GO Forward, Go Backward, STOP, TURN, SPIN & JUMP organized in 6 stages with an optional 7th stage for skaters who want to move onto figure skating. The lessons are taught in a fun, energetic atmosphere promoting continuous movement to music, with lots of rewards and incentives. Lessons are 45 minutes in duration on either, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings with our “Skate Canada Certified Professional Coaches” (ratio 10:1) with assistance by our trained Program Assistants. It is recommended that Skaters register for 2 lessons per week for continual development throughout the year.
Canskaters are assessed by their coach on a day to day basis and badges are earned as the skills at each level are performed at the desired performance levels. Helmets (hockey) are mandatory and all skaters must have their own skates. Rental skates are not available during any of our sessions. Please refer to the Parent Handbook in the registration section of the website and also Important Dates to Remember for start and end dates.
What’s after Canskate?
Skaters can stay in Canskate to continue to refine their skills or choose to be figure skaters, speed skaters, hockey or ringette players and could also take lessons through our CanPowerskate programs. Once Canskaters complete Stage 3 they will be invited to join our Junior Development Program for those skaters that would like to develop as figure skaters and work towards the Skate Canada STARSkate program.

| JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT |
 |
 |
|
 |
The Delta Skating Club Junior Development Program is for young skaters that have achieved Canskate Stage 3 and who have been identified in the CanSkate Program by our coaches with talent and a keen interest in figure skating.
Junior Development is the next stage for skaters to bridge the gap between CanSkate group lessons and StarSkate Programs, when skaters get individual attention and begin private lessons in preparation for StarSkate competitions and Skate Canada Tests.
The program introduces skaters to various disciplines of figure skating (freeskate, skills & dance) in a fun, energetic group format. The program is divided into two groups based on age and ability, with a maximum of 10 skaters per Skate Canada coach:
- Under 8 years old, working on CanSkate Stage 4 and higher
- 8 -10 years old, working on CanSkate Stage 5 & 6 and Elementary StarSkate level
Once skaters reach Stage 6 they can start working on their own program set to music and upon completion of the Junior Development program, skaters will be able to perform at least two rotational jumps, spin and be ready to move onto the StarSkate program.
The Junior Development program consists of two 1-hour ON-ICE and two half-hour OFF-ICE sessions per week from September to March. Two classes per week are mandatory, as the program emphasizes quick progress in a fun, enthusiastic group format. The program focuses on the fundamentals of figure skating consisting of stops, edges, turns, jumps and spins. We also encourage skaters to supplement this program with a private lesson, with the coach of their choice on Friday’s at 3:30 – 4:30PM in Tsawwassen. We will also be offering a Ballet class for skaters on either Tuesday evening or Saturday afternoon in Richmond.
It is important that skaters in the Junior Development program wear proper skating attire. Please refer to the Parent Handbook and Skater Code of Conduct Form in the registration section of our website and also Important Dates to Remember for start and end dates.
What’s after Junior Development?
After one to two years in Junior Development, skaters are ready to move onto the Skate Canada StarSkate program to develop basic figure skating skills with the option of taking more Skate Canada Tests and creating a program to music and enter local StarSkate Competitions.

Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition – this is what STARSkate is all about!
STARSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating. Unique in Canada, this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system. Skaters who have mastered figure skating skills in STARSkate may also choose to pursue synchronized skating or pairs skating. There are also many opportunities for STARSkate Program skaters to participate in local competitions.

DSC STARSkate Program
The STARSkate program is the next step after the Junior Development Program. Skaters are taught the fundamentals of figure skating through on-ice private and group lessons and move along at their own pace working with a coach of their choice. They also take off-ice classes such as ballet, flexibility and dryland training, to complement their on-ice development.
How STARSkate Works
The STARSkate program consists of figure skating skills in four areas – Skating Skills, Ice Dance, Free Skate and Interpretive. Each area is divided into the following levels:
Primary Level Tests
- kating Skills: Preliminary, Junior Bronze
- Free Skating: Preliminary, Junior Bronze
- Dance: Preliminary, Junior Bronze
- Interpretive: Introductory
Intermediate Level Tests
- Skating Skills: Senior Bronze, Junior Silver
- Free Skating: Senior Bronze, Junior Silver
- Dance: Senior Bronze, Junior Silver
- Interpretive: Bronze
Senior Level Tests

- Free Skating: Senior Silver, Gold

- Interpretive: Silver, Gold
STARSkate Program Options
There are many options that a skater can take during and after STARSkate that should be discussed with their coaches. One can take Skate Canada Tests to develop their skills in conjunction with entering STARSkate competitions or the athlete can choose to move into the Skate Canada CompetitiveSkate program. Others options available include; Synchronized Skating, Coaching, Volunteering, Judging or continue inCollegiateSkate (Ontario Universities only) or AdultSkate.
Competitions for STARSkate Athletes
STARSkate participants love to compete! Our feedback indicates that even though a skater may choose not to participate in the Skate Canada CompetitiveSkate Program, they still want the opportunity to test their skill in a competition situation. Skate Canada offers several opportunities to do this.
STARSkate Interclub Competitions
These are events involving a number of clubs in the same region or area. The competition categories offered generally fall in line with the applicable Skate Canada Section specifications, so that all Inter-clubs within the Section are standardized (this allows Skate Canada Sections to offer a Section Final).
Invitational Competitions
These are events coordinated by a Section or Club(s) and offered, generally, to STARSkaters and competitive. Most events fall within Skate Canada's specifications regarding program length and eligibility to compete. For more information consult the BC Yukon Section (www.skatinginbc.com)

| OFF-ICE PROGRAMS |
 |
 |
|
 |
Our Junior Development and StarSkate programs will have OFF-ICE programs that are an important part of a skaters development to improve on ice performance and also to prevent injury to the athlete. OFF-ICE will help with balance, strength, agility, flexibility and strength.
OFF-ICE for Junior Development will consist of two half hour sessions per week prior to on-ice sessions, focusing on stretching, flexibility and performing jump rotations and walking-through of jumps and holding spirals. The StarSkate OFF-ICE will focus on the same elements as the Junior Development athletes (balance, strength, agility, flexibility and strength), but will involve more strength training, stretching and some running for endurance.
Skaters are required to wear appropriate clothing for OFF-ICE sessions, including running shoes and bring a skipping rope, yoga type mat and water bottle.

| POWERSKATE (ages 5 and older) |
|
|
Powerskate is a program for skaters who already know how to skate forwards, backwards and stop and who are particularly interested in hockey or ringette. This program develops skating ability while emphasizing speed, power, coordination and endurance. Children needing to learn to skate should register in our CANSKATE learn to skate program.
Although hockey sticks will be used during classes, our Powerskate program puts emphasis on improving skating skills rather than stick handling. Full Hockey/Ringette equipment is required. Please register for the appropriate session ability.
For more information on this program please contact our Club Administrator
at (604) 940-6749. Just a reminder that skate rentals are NOT available
during Powerskate.
